The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) uncovered loads of weapons during recent search operations in the southern Damascus countryside, the Syrian state TV announced on March 28.

“As a result of the close surveillance of the army’s anti-terror unit in the southern region, and in cooperation with honest locals, we uncovered large quantities of weapons and ammunition, which were hidden in several underground depots,” an army officer told the Syrian TV.

The ammo depots contained loads of light and heavy weapons, including:

  • A US-made TOW anti-tank guided missile (ATGM);
  • An Israeli-made copy of the U.S. M72 LAW anti-tank rocket;
  • Two Yugoslav-made M79 Osa anti-tank weapons along with several rounds;
  • Two RPG-28 anti-tank rocket-propelled grenades;
  • An RPG-22 anti-tank rocket-propelled grenade;
  • Ten Grad 122mm Rockets.

Between 2014 and 2017, the U.S. and its allies supplied the Free Syrian Army (FSA) with loads of weapons under a “train and equip” program that was authorized by former U.S. President Barack Obama. While most of the weapons were bought from eastern European countries, some were made by the U.S. itself, like the TOW ATGM.
