A unit of the Russian Special Forces has arrived in the southeastern governorate of al-Suwayda in order to support the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) operation against the remaining ISIS fighters in the area of al-Safa, a military source told the Syrian pro-government blog al-Masdar News on November 8.
According to the source, the Russian Special Forces will advise the SAA and its allies on the ground, while also providing ISIS coordinates to the Russian Aerospace Forces.
A day earlier, Syrian pro-government sources reported that the elite 4th Division had been redeployed from northwestern Syria to positions around al-Safa. Several heavy rocket launchers were also deployed near the ISIS-held area.
A source in the SAA told SouthFront that the SAA and its allies are preparing to launch a new attack on ISIS fighters in al-Safa. The attack will supposedly begin the upcoming few hours.
Since late July, the SAA and its allies have launched several attacks on ISIS al-Safa. However, the area’s rough terrain as well as other local factors allowed the terrorist group to repel all the attacks. This situation may change if the Russian Aerospace Forces provides an active support to the army’s upcoming attack.
